Seeking journalistic experience, Ally Lawhon came to Marshall University's High School Journalism Workshop June 24-27 funded by the Herald-Dispatch. The fifteen-year-old junior attends Hurricane High School which won't begin offering journalism classes until Fall 2012.
Despite the lack of journalistic training available at her high school, Lawhon has a background in writing. She was the winner of a local "In God We Trust" essay contest her sophomore year and has submitted a short story for competition at Shepherd University. Language Arts teacher Martina Hart said Lawhon is an "excellent writer who strives to be the absolute best she can be."
Lawhon's passion for writing possibly stems from her passion for reading. Classic novels are her preferred reading material. George Orwell's 1984 is one of her favorites. Lawhon's interest in reading and writing as well as Hart's interpretation of her as an "enthusiastic scholar" create a solid foundation for a career in journalism.
